Obituary for Viola Bangel (Westerfield)

Viola (Westerfield) Bangel, 89, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2016. Viola was born to Hubert H. and Leona E. (Schenck) Westerfield on May 26, 1927 in Danville, IN. Viola graduated from Decatur Central High School in 1945 and attended Blackburn College for two years. She married Norman Bangel on August 28, 1949.

Viola was a lifetime farm wife. She was also a waitress at the Indianapolis Convention Center for 20 years. She was a lifetime member of West Newton Friends Meeting. She was a member and Women's Leader of Indiana Farm Bureau and Board Member of Marion County Farm Bureau. She lived in Decatur Township for most of her life.

Viola hosted thousands of students to her family farm for education purposes. Later, she would go on to visit many Marion County classrooms under the program, "Farming in the Classroom."

Viola was active in U.S.F.W. (United Society of Friends Women), where she cooked and served hundreds of meals for fundraisers and was known as the Queen of the Decatur Township Lions Club dinners.

Her hobbies included quilting, reading, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

Over the past few years, she was involved with and supported The Goodwin Center.

Viola is survived by seven children: Lewis (Norma Jean) Bangel of Mooresville, Norma Wallman of Indianapolis, James (Brenda) Bangel of Indianapolis, Caroline (Rodger) Jaennette of IA, Wayne (Julie) Bangel of Indianapolis, John (Judy) Bangel of Mooresville and Milton Bangel of Indianapolis; 20 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Gladys Dorrell, Opal Barnett and Phyllis Barnett. Viola is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, Lewis and Alton Westerfield and a sister, Marjorie Tigner.

Family and friends may gather from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at Jones Family Mortuary in Mooresville and 9-10 a.m. on Friday, June 17, 2016 at West Newton Friends Meeting, 6800 S. Mooresville Road in Indianapolis. Dale Dorrell will officiate Viola's celebration of life service at 10 a.m. at West Newton Friends Meeting. Viola will be laid to rest in Memorial Park Cemetery, Indianapolis.
