Obituary for Homer R Dorrell

Homer R. Dorrell, 89, of Mooresville, IN, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2013. Homer was born to Merrill and Lillian (Barnett) Dorrell on June 9, 1924 in West Newton, IN. Homer married Gladys W. (Westerfield) Dorrell on July 20, 1947.

Homer graduated from Decatur Central High School in 1942. He received his B.S. in Secondary Education from Indiana University and went on to earn his Masters in Secondary Education from Ball State University. Homer was a High School Science Teacher for Wayne Township Schools for 21 years, retiring in 1985. He also taught in Kenya, East Africa for 8 1/2 years. Homer was a World War II Army Veteran. He was a member of West Newton Friends Meeting. He also was a member of Western Yearly Meeting and Friends United Meeting where he and his wife served as missionaries for 8 1/2 years in Kenya, East Africa. Homer has lived in West Newton, IN all of his life.

Homer is survived by his wife of 66 years, Gladys W. (Westerfield) Dorrell of Mooresville, IN; three sons, Harold Leslie Dorrell of Loogootee, IN, Dale Eugene Dorrell of Newton, Iowa and Dean Allen Dorrell of Washington, IN; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren; three brothers, Kenneth Dorrell of Indianapolis, IN, Chester Dorrell of Indianapolis, IN and W. Ernest Dorrell of Florida and one sister, Mabel White of Franklin, IN. Homer is preceded in death by his parents, Merrill and Lillian (Barnett) Dorrell and his brother, Robert Dorrell and sister, Marjorie Imhausen.

Family and friends may attend calling hours from 4-8pm, Monday, October 21, 2013 at Jones Crossing Banquet Center, next to Jones Family Mortuary, and from 9-10am, Tuesday, October 22, 2013. Dale Eugene Dorrell will officiate the 10am service also at Jones Crossing Banquet Center on Tuesday, October 22, 2013. Homer will be laid to rest in West Newton Cemetery.
