Obituary for George A. Ditton

George A. Ditton, 79 years of age from Mooresville, IN passed away Monday, October 27, 2008. He was born September 14, 1929 in Mitchell, IN to the late Rudolph and Mary Etta (Jones) Ditton. George married the late Pearl I. (Gooler) Ditton on November 6, 1949 in Couer D'Alene, Idaho. George married Dorothy (Shaw) Ditton of Mooresville, IN on November 7, 1975.

He has lived in Mooresville, IN since 1970. He is also a 1947 Mitchell High School Graduate and also a Graduate of Modesto Jr. College in Modesto, CA, and also U.S. Airforce Schools. George is a Veteran from the Vietnam and the Korean Wars. He was also an Air Force Senior Master Sergeant. He was involved in the Air Force Gunners Association, Mooresville VFW Post 1111, and the Martinsville Elks Club. Before retiring in 1994, He was the Mooresville Chief of Police for 13 years. Previously, he was a Police Officer for Mooresville Police Department from 1971-1981. He was also owner-operator of Ditton Sunoco Gas Station for 1 year. He enlisted into Army Air Corp in 1947 (which later became U.S. Air Force). George's duties included Combat Crew Gunner in B-29's, B-36's, and B-52's, Flight Instructor, Squadron Gunnery Non-Commissioned Officer in charge, and Wing Gunnery Non-Commissioned Officer in charge. He flew combat in Korea (B-29's) and Viet-Nam (B-52's). He received several medals and citations. George retired from the Air Force in 1970 as a Senior Master Sergeant.

He is survived by his Wife, Dorothy (Shaw) Ditton of Mooresville, IN; 6 Children: Marilyn S. Ditton of Georgia, James L. Ditton of Indianapolis, IN, Betty J. (Ditton) Wallace of Spencer, IN, Ronald D. Ditton of Ft. Wayne, IN, Darlene Moore of Mooresville, IN, and Karel Sampson of Jeffersonville, IN; 19 Grandchildren; Several Great Grandchildren; and 3 Sisters: Helen Loren and Betty George of AZ and Carolyn Henderson of Greenwood/Indianapolis, IN. He is also preceded in death by 1 Son, Larry A. Ditton, 3 Brothers: W. Howard, John and James Ditton, and 2 Sisters, Mary Bowden and Irene Allen.

Calling hours for George will be from 3-7pm, Thursday, October 30 and from 9-10am, Friday, October 31, 2008 at Jones Family Mortuary. The Funeral will be at 10am, Friday, October 31, 2008 at Jones Family Mortuary with Charles Paxton to officiate. George will be laid to rest at White Lick Cemetery.
