Waneta Vera (Green) Hatfield, 101, of Indianapolis, passed away Saturday, October 4th, 2025. She was born December 20th, 1923 in Indianapolis to her parents Marion Franklin and Vera Elizabeth (Nuetzman) Green. She married the late Claude William "Bill" Hatfield on January 25th, 1945.
Waneta is survived by her three children: Terry Hatfield (Sue) of Avon, Rick Hatfield (Jeri) of Mooresville, and Tammy Mabrey (Stacy) of Martinsville; six grandchildren: Kimberly Weber of Danville, Karla Janning of Avon, Rhiannon Hatfield of Indianapolis, Ricky Hatfield of Indianapolis, Lisa Hacker of Martinsville, and Christopher Mabrey of Martinsville; and 11 great grandchildren: Conner, Aven, Harrison, Destiny, Rheanna, Kersten, William, Thomas, Daniel, Megan, and Lauren.
Waneta is preceded in death by both of her parents; husband, Claude William "Bill" Hatfield; two brothers: Milburn Green and Norman Nuetzman; and one sister, Laverne McCloud.
Waneta attended Indianapolis Public Schools, where she excelled as a straight-A student and became class president. Selected as the Children's Museum Representative, she proudly represented her school at various ceremonies. Her early work in the cafeteria at Decatur Central Junior High School as a cashier and baker, along with her role at Balkamp in Indianapolis, showcased her dedication.
With a remarkable talent for floristry, Waneta flourished at Pandell's Florist where she was a florist and Madison Avenue Flower Shop as a wedding planner, later becoming the proud owner of Rose and Ribbon Flower Shop and Mrs. Hatfield's Flowers and Gifts. Her commitment to community was evident through her active membership at Valley Mills Friends Church and pivotal roles in Purdue University Homemakers, where she embraced leadership positions over the years.
In 1957, she and her husband built their family home in Valley Mills, where they raised their three children and where she lived until her final days. Waneta left an indelible mark on the Decatur Township community as an employee of the Metropolitan School District of Decatur Township, a contributing member of the Decatur Township Neighborhood Coalition, the Valley Mills Quaker Meeting, and as a founding member of the Decatur Township Homemakers Club where she remained an active member.
Known by many as a wise and independent woman, she inspired those around her with her role model qualities and her unconditional love.
Family and friends may show their love and support from 5 to 8 pm on Friday, October 10th and from 10 to 11 am on Saturday, October 11th at Jones Family Funeral and Cremation Service in Mooresville. A celebration of life service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, October 11th following visitation at the funeral home. Waneta will be laid to rest next to her husband, Bill at West Newton Cemetery in West Newton.
