Stephen R. Dalton

August 18, 1945 — November 15, 2024

It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved, Stephen Dalton, who peacefully passed away at his home in Camby, Indiana on November 15, 2024, at the age of 79. He was surrounded by loved ones.

Steve Dalton was a cherished Papaw and loved his large family dearly. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Linda Dalton; son Richard (Jennifer) Dalton and grandchildren Kylie Dalton and Drew Dalton; daughter Penny (Mark) Lloyd, grandchildren Holly (Sean) Diggs, Natosha (CJ) Pierini, Emilee (Brad) Smith, and great-grandchildren Madison, Cali, Miranda, Colton, Kamber, and Cody; stepdaughter Kelly Bowling, grandchildren Coty Sledge (Jessica Burton), Shylo Sledge (Scott Wilkey), and Talen Sledge, and great-grandchildren Corbin, Lakai, Kian, and Eiley; stepson Bryan (Leslie) Bowling and grandchildren Breanna Bowling, Lindsay (Caleb) Alvarez, and Madison Bowling; and stepson Anthony Bowling (Travis Hollans). He is also survived by his siblings: Tom (Cheryl) Dalton, Maggie (Jeff) Hancock, Norma (Jerry) Aldrich, Joe (Karen) Dalton, and Theresa (Mike) Sauter; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Rosemary Dalton, and siblings: Judy McWhirter, Kay Powers, Mike Dalton, and Marty Dalton.

Steve grew up in Indianapolis, attending Sacred Heart Grade School and graduating from Cathedral High School. He attended Purdue University to study Engineering before leaving with the Marines to serve our country in Vietnam. Upon returning, he joined Allison Transmissions where he worked his entire career before retiring. He quickly grew restless and went to work for a friend managing their store, Vineyard Liquors, for nearly a decade before he finally hung up his hat to enjoy full retirement in July 2024, just before receiving his cancer diagnosis.

Steve was known for his great sense of humor and always went out of his way to make others smile. He loved telling jokes and earned the affectionate nickname 'Uncle Goober' from his many nieces and nephews. He was a proud Papaw and loved talking about his grandchildren. He would often be found cheering on his grandchildren and great-grandchildren at every sporting event or awards ceremony that he could attend; if he couldn't attend, he would always follow up with a call or text to see how it went. He loved Decatur Township and enjoyed meeting and chatting with everyone in the community. He was a kid at heart but was full of wisdom. He was a tutor for many students over the years. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved them.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the love, support, and condolences during this difficult time. They are compiling memories and stories to celebrate Steve's life. If you have a memory to share—a funny story, a memorable event, a brief encounter, or simply a note honoring his memory—please feel free to post it online or share it with the family. These contributions will be part of a special compilation in his honor.

The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the doctors and nurses at IU West and The Springs of Mooresville for their compassion and care, with special appreciation to his grandchildren—nurses Holly, Tosha, and Emilee—who worked tirelessly around the clock to ensure his comfort during his final days.

In lieu of flowers, please share your memories with the family or make donations to St. Jude https://www.stjude.org/donate/donate-to-st-jude.html or the Decatur Township Educational Foundation https://www.dtedfoundation.net/ in Steve Dalton's memory.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Jones Family Funeral and Cremation Service in Mooresville.
