It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Shirley Elaine Borders, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, who left this world on June 1, 2026, at the age of 64. Born on May 24, 1962, in Indianapolis, to her parents William A. "Bill" and Bonnie J. (Barker) Clossey, Shirley filled her life with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories. She married John "Del" Borders Sr. on August 10, 2006 and the two spent nearly 20 years together.
Shirley attended Decatur Central High School, and later embraced her role as a homemaker with joy and passion. She showcased her culinary talents through her delicious cooking, especially her famous BBQ sauces that could brighten any gathering. A vibrant spirit, she found solace and delight in the simple pleasures of life, whether it was tending to her bird feeders and marveling at the beauty of nature or losing herself in a good book.
A passionate lover of animals, particularly birds, dogs and cats, Shirley found joy in the small wonders around her. Her affinity for collecting coins mirrored her appreciation for life's treasures-both big and small. Known for her contagious laughter and warm smile, she never met a stranger and was always ready to welcome others into her heart. Shirley was a friend to many, embodying kindness and generosity in everything she did.
Shirley is survived by her devoted husband, John "Del" Borders Sr., and two beloved sons, Jeremy Carr (Karina Hercamp) of Plainfield and Joshua Kyle Carr (Lisa Frye) of Milltown, IN. Her stepsons, Ja-Wesley Borders and John Del Borders Jr., as well as her honorary children, Jennifer Johnson and John Henry (Debbie). She was a proud grandmother to six grandchildren: Austin, Jaden, Katelynn, Britney, Jason, and Layla, and she cherished her relationships with several step-grandchildren. Shirley is also survived by siblings Dwain Clossey, Beverly Adams (Harold), and Dorothy Reynolds (Toby), along with her honorary sister, Stephanie Mitchell. She leaves behind cherished nieces and nephews, including Kalie Liebler, Niel Liebler, Rhett Reynolds, and Gabby Reynolds, and her beloved fur babies: Daisy May, Snowball, and Brutus.
Preceding Shirley in death were both of her parents, who will forever be remembered as she joins them in eternal peace.
Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Jones Family Funeral and Cremation Service in Mooresville. A memorial gathering will be held at a later date.
As we remember Shirley, let us carry forward her legacy of compassion, laughter, and the love she shared with all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
