With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Robert N. Garner, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, who left us on April 10, 2026, at the age of 99. Born on December 19, 1926, in New Castle, Indiana, to his parents Andrew and Mary Abby (Cook) Garner, Bob lived a life full of service, love, and dedication. Bob married the late Colette A. (Welsh) Garner on January 19, 1957.
A proud graduate of Decatur Central High School in 1944, Bob pursued further education at Butler University before answering the call of his country. He enlisted in the United States Navy on February 24, 1945, where he served as a Radioman Third Class during World War II until his honorable discharge on July 18, 1946. His commitment to duty and service was a testament to his character, embodying the values of humility and kindness throughout his life.
Bob enjoyed a fulfilling 32-year career as a mail carrier for the United States Post Office, where he was known not just for his reliability but also for the warm interactions he shared with community members. He retired in 1989, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and compassion.
As a lifelong member of Camby Community Church, Bob found joy and purpose in faith. His love for music brought light to his life; whether strumming his bass guitar or playing his harmonica, he delighted in sharing the gift of melody with others. He also cherished the simplest pleasures in life, like reading, camping, and fishing, often drawing loved ones close for memorable moments in nature.
Bob leaves behind a loving family, including his three children: Dee Marquam of Indianapolis, Kevin Garner (Kim) of Indianapolis, and Bruce Garner (Diana) of Beech Grove. He is also survived by six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. He joins in peace with his parents, his wife, Collette Garner; daughter, Patricia Lilly; brother, Kenneth Garner; sister, Mary "Sis" Agnes Hadaway; and grandson, David.
Bob's kindness and gentle spirit will forever be remembered by all who knew him, a humble servant who gave so much to others.
A celebration of Bob's life will be held on April 16, 2026, beginning with family and friends to pay their respects during the first public visitation on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 15, 2026.
