Richard D. "Rich" Kelley, 62, of Mooresville, passed away peacefully after a battle with cancer on February 28, 2017, with his loving family by his side. He was born to John E. and Waneta (Quimby) Kelley on February 10, 1955 in Bloomington. He married Bonnie M. (Shahan) Kelley on June 10, 1995.
Rich graduated from Bloomington South High School in 1973, where he was part of an undefeated 20 year football streak. He continued his education at Indiana University where he obtained his Bachelor's Degree in General Education. He furthered his education at IUPUI where he obtained his Masters Degree in Education.
Since August, Rich has been a Professor of Technology for Blue River Career Programs in Shelbyville. Previously, he was an Auto Shop Teacher for Mooresville High School for 35 years, retiring in 2011. He was also an Assistant Football Coach for several years and really enjoyed his involvment with the homecoming girls flag football games.
Rich was a member of Mt. Gilead Church in Mooresville and Greenwood Fishing Club. He wasn't a golfer but enjoyed playing golf. He was an animal lover as he had several large dogs of his own. He lived in Mooresville since 1981 and grew up in Bloomington.
Rich is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Bonnie Kelley of Mooresville; and a son, Sam "Tony" Gabbard of Bloomington. He is preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Sherylann Kelley.
Family and friends may gather from 4- 8 p.m. on Friday, March 3, 2017 and 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2017 in Jones Crossing Banquet Center, next door to Jones Family Mortuary, Mooresville. Pastor Terry Crist will officiate Rich's celebration of life service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2017 in Jones Crossing Banquet Center. Rich will be laid to rest at a later date for a private family burial in Greene County Chapel Cemetery in Solsberry.
