Listen to Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Maurice Lee Gentry, age 93, who departed this life peacefully on January 23, 2026. Born to his parents, Glenn and Elon (Bicknell) Gentry on November 6, 1932, in Richmond, Kentucky, Maurice was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He married the late Luella Sue (Steinmetz) Gentry on June 13, 1964. He resided in Indianapolis, where he touched the lives of those around him with his unwavering spirit and kindness.

Maurice was a proud attendee of Mooresville High School and later attended Lincoln Technical Institute, where he received his certification in Diesel Mechanics. His passion for the automotive industry led him to a fulfilling career as a Diesel Mechanic, with a notable tenure at Kenworth in Indianapolis, before retiring to work with McKinley Property Maintenance. Maurice's expertise and dedication were evident in every project he undertook, and he took great pride in his work.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Maurice served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, an experience he held close to his heart. His commitment to his country and community defined his character; he was known for his strength, stubbornness, and his endearing sense of humor. Maurice often shared his favorite sayings: "See ya later alligator, after while crocodile," "Plant ya now, dig you later," and "I'm still kickin' it but not very high," bringing smiles to the faces of those who knew him.

Maurice was a devoted family man, cherished by his children: Steven Franke of Camby, Linda McKinley of Mooresville, and Todd Gentry (Lisa) of North Carolina. He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Stephanie Blanchard (Alan), Christopher Gentry, Stephen Franke, Kimberly Maddox (Michael), Dr. Tanner McKinley (Dr. Hailey), and Tori McKinley; as well as five great-grandchildren: Vince Blanchard, Lily Maddox, Alexander Maddox, Collins McKinley, and Kendall McKinley. He is also survived by his loving brother, Louis Gentry, and a multitude of nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will hold his memory dear.

Maurice was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Luella Sue Gentry, as well as his parents and several siblings: five sisters-Lillie Miller, Virginia Hammer, Jeffie Wade, Maxine Gentry, and Druscilla Van Hoy-and two brothers, Clark Gentry and Jessie Gentry.

In tribute to his life, a series of services will be held on January 30, 2026. A public visitation at 11:00 AM, and a funeral service will commence at 1:00 PM at Jones Family Funeral and Cremation Service in Mooresville. Maurice will be laid to rest next to his wife, Luella Sue, at West Newton Cemetery following the graveside service.

We invite all who knew and loved Maurice to join us in celebrating his remarkable life and the indelible mark he left on our hearts. His love, laughter, and wisdom will be remembered always.
