Lillian Virginia Neuhaus Callahan, 92, passed away peacefully on Feb. 21, 2014. Lillian was born in Pittsboro on Aug. 13, 1921 to Leroy and Ada Marie (Veatch) Callahan. Lillian graduated from Tech High School in 1972 and attended IUPUI from 1973-1974. She married George Samuel Neuhaus in Salone, AZ on July 11, 1941 and they were married 25 years.
Lillian was employed at RCA and Curtis Wright and later joined the Marion County Sheriff's Department as a switchboard operator. In January 1967, Lillian became the first female deputy sheriff in Marion County and retired from the Sheriff's Department after 25 years. Lillian was deputized as a U.S. Marshall in 1973. She was a member of the Job's Daughters and American Legion #64 at Holt Road. Lillian served in the Eastern Star, Lynhurst Chapter #505 for over 60 years, and was a member of Ad-Mar for over 60 years, which she was past president of Auxillary and served twice as Worthy Matron. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police #86 since 1967. She served as Royal Matron in the Amaranth, of which she was a member of over 25 years and was also a member of the Oriental Shrine, Daughters of the Nile and the White Shrine of Jerusalem, in which she was a past Worthy High Priestess. She was a member of Ben Davis Christian Church for 53 years.
Lillian is survived by three daughters, Patricia A. Scaggs of Indianapolis, Linda L. Shadowens of Downs, IL and Nancy M. (Robert) Couch of Martinsville; three brothers, William L. (Teresa) Callahan of Martinsville, Leroy G. Callahan of Indianapolis and Basil M. Callahan of Brownsburg; 9 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Leroy and Ada Marie Callahan.
Family and friends may attend calling hours from 4-8 p.m., Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at Jones Crossing Banquet Center, next door to Jones Family Mortuary in Mooresville. There will be an 11 a.m. celebration of life service on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014 at Jones Crossing Banquet Center. Lillian will be laid to rest in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Hall, IN.
