John R. Mattingly, 85, of Mooresville, IN, passed away and went to be with the "Love of his Life" Dorothy on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 St. Francis Hospital - Indianapolis. John was born in Knox County, IN to David E. and Earla (Guiler) Mattingly. John married Dorothy (Wilkes) Mattingly on April 10, 1953.
John lived in Knox County, IN for 23 years and in Mooresville since 1954. John served in the Air Force and was a Korean War Vet. He worked for Eli Lilly in Tool and Die Maintenance for 38 years before retiring in 1991. John was a member of the Mooresville VFW Post #1111 and Mooresville American Legion Post #103. He was a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America for 8 years, little league coach, girls softball league coach and league President for several years and was a master fisherman and storyteller.
John is survived by 2 sons: John E. (Janet) Mattingly of Indianapolis and Jay Lester of Indianapolis; 2 daughters: Cheryl Mitchell of Mooresville and Donna (Jeff) Stroude of Indianapolis; 7 grandchildren: Lena Osman, Jessica Moore, Jennifer Sutton, Zachary Mattingly, Robert, Aaron and Megan Stroude and 8 great grandchildren and sister, Barbara Van Meter of Bicknell, IN. John is also preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother, Erba M. "Matt" Mattingly and step mother, Dortha Fulk.
Family and friends may gather 2-5 p.m., Sunday, December 6, 2015 and 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 7, 2015 at Jones Family Mortuary, Mooresville. Pastor David Gibson will officiate the celebration of life at 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 7, 2015 at Jones Family Mortuary, Mooresville. John will be laid to rest in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
