James Woodrow O'Neill Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on August 20, 1938, in Indianapolis, to his parents James Woodrow O'Neill and Ivy W. Harper, James filled his life with unwavering dedication and love for his family and friends. He married Dana Lynn (Morris) O'Neill on February 20, 2021.
James was known for his 33 years of remarkable service as an auctioneer at Wolf's Auto Auction in Indianapolis, retiring in 2006. His passion for trading horses and his love for trail riding and camping reflected his adventurous spirit. Those who knew him fondly remember his hardworking nature and his endless stories, often embellished, that could light up a room. Above all, James cherished his role as a provider, and his heart was full of pride for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Dana O'Neill of Mooresville, and three sons: Jimmy O'Neill of Lebanon, Jeff Trent of Plainfield, and Gregory O'Neill (Jami) of Mooresville. James also leaves behind four stepdaughters: Deidra Cross (Daryl) of Mooresville, Kimberly Osting (James) of Trafalgar, Anne Bogan of Lebanon, and Jennifer Tharp (Jake) of Pittsboro. His legacy continues through five grandchildren: Maci Whitman (Matthew), Nicole Johnson (Brady), Gregory O'Neill II (Tiffany), Rubi O'Neill, and Jarret O'Neill (Elon), along with several step-grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren who adored him.
James was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings: Paul, Sonny, Gloria "Sis," and Donnie. His family will forever hold his memory in their hearts, knowing the profound impact he made on their lives.
In honor of James's life, a series of services will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026. A public visitation will be held starting at 11:30 AM. A funeral service will commence at 1:00 PM at Jones Family Funeral and Cremation Service, leading to a graveside service at West Newton Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest.
As we gather to celebrate James's remarkable journey and share stories of his life, we invite all who knew and loved him to join in honoring his legacy. His spirit will continue to inspire and bring smiles to the faces of those who remember his warmth and joy.
