Homer "Pop" Calvert Jr.

January 18, 1930 — December 31, 2024

Homer "Pop" Calvert Jr. lived a life filled with love, joy, and adventure. He passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2024 surrounded by his family. He was born on January 18, 1930 in Indianapolis to Homer and Fannie Calvert.

Pop had a very active youth and he shared so many stories of how he spent his younger days. He later met Joyce and the two married. They spent time in Korea; serving as a Sergeant in the Army. When he returned home, he and Joyce started a family; first Suzanne (Terry Lyons), then Tamara (Leo Rafail), and Noble (Melanie Calvert), along with 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his beloved, Joyce; his grandson, Travis Pierce; his parents; and his siblings.

He is known throughout Indiana and Florida as a relentless negotiator when he buys and sells anything. Sometimes, he would spend a couple of hours negotiating a price, just for the sport of it, knowing full well he would not make a purchase. He also absolutely loved fishing. Although his negotiation skills did not work on the fish, whether he caught anything or not, he thoroughly enjoyed any time with a fishing line in the water, especially if a grandchild or great-grandchild was with him. The one thing he did every week was play the lottery and he was convinced that one day he would hit big, even though he never did.

His strong work ethic made him successful in his career in trucking and logistics with McLean Trucking and Best Foods, as well as his work at Kendrick Hospital and Tube Processing Corporation.

Please join Homer's family in celebrating a well-lived life. Since Homer was guided by the words of Mark Twain, "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story," let's share some stories together.

Family and friends may show their love and support from 11am to 1pm on Saturday, January 4th at Jones Family Funeral and Cremation Service in Mooresville. A celebration of life service will be held at 1pm following visitation at the funeral home. Homer will be laid to rest next to his wife Joyce, at West Newton Cemetery in West Newton.
