Charles Cecil Shanklin Jr., 84, of Avon, IN passed away August 19, 2006. He was born September 3, 1921 in Indianapolis, IN to the late Ethel (Surber) and Charles Cecil Shanklin Sr. Charles married Thelma (Hall) Shanklin on March 2, 1974.
He lived in Avon for 33 years and in Camby, IN for 30 years. He was a 1939 Decatur Central High School Graduate and was inducted to the Decatur Central Hall of Fame in 1982 and also attended Indiana University for 1 year. He was a Veteran, Life Member of the West Newton Masonic Lodge, Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite and Indianapolis Murat Shrine. Before retiring in 1979, he was a Senior Process Engineer for General Motors in Indianapolis, IN for 36 years. Previously, he was a Pro Athlete for several years. After attending Indiana University for 1 year on a basketball scholarship, he went Pro in Baseball, playing for the Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees and for Milwaukee. He also played Pro Basketball in the NBA for the Ft. Wayne (Detroit) Pistons and for Wisconsin Oshkosh, where he was part of the 1942 NBA Championship team.
Charles Jr. was survived by his wife, Thelma (Hall) Shanklin of Avon, IN; 6 Children: Ron Shanklin of Indianapolis, Rick Woods of PA, Donna Clearwater of Stilesville, IN, Keith Woods of Mooresville, IN, Denise Hernandez of TN,and Theresa Smither of Avon, IN; 15 Grandchildren; 9 Great Grandchildren; 2 Brothers: Max Shanklin of Mooresville, IN and Jack Shanklin of Camby, IN. Charles is preceded in death by 1 Daughter, Gwendolyn Baldwin, 1 Brother, Marvin Shanklin, and 1 Sister, Virginia Butler.
Calling hours will be from 4-8pm, Monday, August 21, 2006 at Jones Family Mortuary with a Masonic Service beginning at 7:30pm. The funeral will be at 10am, Tuesday, August 22, 2006 also at Jones Family Mortuary. Charles Cecil Shanklin Jr. will be laid to rest at West Newton Cemetery.
