Charles Russell Helfenberger, 97, of Indianapolis, passed away Tuesday, March 4th, 2025. He was born August 7th, 1927 in Indianapolis to Charles and Martha (Bills) Helfenberger Jr. He married the late Virginia A. (Moore) Helfenberger on May 27th, 1947.
Charles is survived by his two children: Connie Rackley (Kenny) of Indianapolis and Dave Helfenberger of North Carolina; five grandchildren: Steve Rackley, Lori Rackley, Kelly Chambers, Aaron Helfenberger, and John Helfenberger; eight great grandchildren; one sister, Lois Boudloche; and several nieces and nephews.
Charles is preceded in death by both of his parents; his wife, Virginia A. Helfenberger; and one sister, Barbara Burton.
Charles was a proud graduate of Decatur Central High School, finishing in 1946. After that, he took on an adventurous path by joining the United States Navy, and right after that, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served until 1952. He spent many years as a shop foreman at Indianapolis Power and Light and enjoyed every bit of it until he retired in 1989.
Charles was an active member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Plainfield, where he built great friendships. He had a true passion for gardening and woodworking, filling his days with creativity and growth. He loved being out on the water, boating, and soaking up the sunshine. In his free time, you could find him enjoying a friendly game of pool, always ready to share a laugh and good times with friends.
Family and friends may show their love and support from 12 to 1 pm on Monday, March 10th at Jones Family Funeral and Cremation Service in Mooresville. A celebration of life service will be held at 1 pm following visitation at the funeral home. Charles will be laid to rest at West Newton Cemetery in West Newton.
