Carolyn Rae Shoaf

December 27, 1937 — November 5, 2021

Carolyn Rae (Tomey) Shoaf joined the Lord November 5, 2021, at the age of 83 with her children by her side. She was born and lived her entire life in Indianapolis. She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, and aunt. She had a beautiful smile and a joyful laugh. She was a strong, loving, caring and compassionate lady with a heart of gold.

She married Jack Townsend. Together, they had two children: Vicki and Mark (Lee). As his Muscular Dystrophy worsened, she was his caregiver until he passed in 1980. She was the backbone of the family.

A few years later, she married Morris Shoaf. She cared for him in his final years, after being diagnosed with Lewey Body Dementia. He passed in 2001.

She came from humble beginnings but through hard work and perseverance, she rose above to live a very comfortable life. She was a fantastic role model for her children.

Her first job was inspecting 78s at RCA. After graduating from business college, she worked as a secretary for many years before retiring.

She enjoyed meeting new friends while selling Avon; was an avid Euchre player; enjoyed dogs, ziplining, bowling, dancing, playing piano, painting, playing Scrabble, and doing arts and crafts. She was a very creative lady. She traveled to several places in the US and in the Caribbean. Her favorite vacation spot was Hawaii.

She loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Bethel United Methodist Church for several years.

After being diagnosed with Vascular Dementia, she moved to assisted living in 2017. Since early 2021, she resided in a memory care facility until she passed.

She was a strong, feisty, and stubborn lady but in the end, she lost her battle. God took her home to be with Him and her family and friends who preceded her.

She is free from pain and confusion. She can walk without falling. Most of all, she has regained her independence. And she can once again enjoy the foods she loved, Pasta, Butter Pecan Ice Cream, and an occasional Kit Kat.

She is survived by her daughter, Vicki Townsend, her son, Mark Townsend (Lee), her sister, Beverly Moore, her niece, Mica Knapp (Erikk) and several cousins. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Townsend, husband, Morris Shoaf; father, R. Tomey; mother, Thelma (Lamb) Harnish; step father, Jack Harnish; and brother, Harry Harnish.

She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
