Obituary for Wilber Spaulding

Wilber Spaulding has gone to be with his family. He was the youngest child and last surviving family member. They were all waiting for him in Heaven with open arms. The world is much quieter since his heart stopped beating on February 20th, 2021. It was such a loving and kind heart. His remaining earthly family will miss him in some shape and form every single day, but we know he is now where he needed to be.

Wilber was born on Saturday, November 3rd, 1928, on his father's 42nd birthday. He was the last child born to Frank and Lola (Dooley) Spaulding in Mitchell, Indiana. He graduated from Shoals High School in 1947. where the family resided. He proudly served his country in the United States Army.

He married Mary Lois Parsons on October 9th, 1954, in Huron, Indiana and they shared 66 wonderful years together.

Wilber worked for General Motors, mostly at Plant 5 in Maywood, Indiana for over 30 years before retiring. He was an excellent hunter and fisherman. In his teen years, during WWII when food was scarce, he relied upon his skills to help feed his family, while his older brother Jim was away serving in the war. Later in life he enjoyed fishing and camping at various places, like Hindostan Falls and Catarat Lake.

He was an avid IU fan, especially during the Bobby Knight era. He also enjoyed cheering for Hamilton Southeastern and Plainfield High School, when his grandsons were playing sports and for the Colts. He especially loved watching Nascar races on Sunday afternoons with his family.

Wilber is survived by his loving wife, Mary; his children, Diana (Dan) Winings, Ron Spaulding, David Spaulding and Roger (Kim) Spaulding. He had 9 grandchildren: Chris (Dawn) Winings, Jennifer and Bonnie Winings, Danielle (Braden) Randles, Lindsay (Chris) Jones, Nick (Star) and Matt (Emily) Spaulding, and Michael and Cody Spaulding. He also had 7 great grandchildren.

Besides his parents, Wilber was preceded in death by his siblings: James Spaulding, Mary Mullens, Ivy Davidson, Maxine Payne, Irving Spaulding (died at the age of 2), and Opal Leonard.
