Obituary for Ruth W. Curtis

Ruth W. Curtis 98, Indianapolis, died April 12, 2005. She was born January 15, 1907 to Charles Austin and Nota Almeta Wibel Wampler. She was a 1925 graduate of Gosport High School. She also attended Indiana University and finished her education at Indiana State University. Mrs. Curtis was a member of First Baptist Church, Mooresville and Cheermakers (church club). She received the 2003 WRTV 6 Leadership Award. After four years of teaching experience near Gosport, IN, Ruth came to Monrovia to teach. She spent the next 26 years teaching 1st and 2nd graders to help them learn basic skills that would open the doors to future learning and the outside world. She retired in 1970. According to the July 22, 1995 issue of the White River Valley, "She taught them from books - they taught her from examples of daily trials and stark reality. She was their haven of safety, their port in the storm of life, their mother away from home, their confidante."

She was preceded in death by Husband: Hugh Curtis; Daughter: Kay Allen; Sister: Ester "Bean" Britton and Brother: Richard Wampler. Survivors include Grandchildren: Jan Allen of Indianapolis and Jeanie Allen of Atlanta, GA.

Visitation will be at Jones Family Mortuary Friday, April 15, 2005 from 2-8pm. Funeral will be at 10am at Jones Family Mortuary and will be officiated by Larry Floyd. She will be laid to rest at Stilesville Cemetery.
