Obituary for Raymond Lawrence Gourley

Raymond Lawrence Gourley, 71, of Camby, passed away Thursday, May 5th, 2022. He was born November 22nd, 1950 in Marietta, Ohio to his parents, Harry Homer and Eva Marion (Connor) Gourley. He married Patricia Gourley on July 15th, 1972 and they reunited in marriage again on May 26th, 2020. He was previously married to Jeanne Gourley April 22nd, 2011. He was a previous resident of El Paso, Texas from the age of eight.

Ray is survived by his wife, Patricia Gourley of Camby; his five children: Ed Gourley, Marie Gourley, Dan Gourley, Joe Gourley, and Tim Gourley; one son-in-law and four daughter-in-laws; 22 grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and one brother, David Gourley. Ray is preceded in death by both of his parents; and his siblings: Richard Gourley, Pearl "Butch" Gourley, Patricia Gourley, Wayne Gourley, Gary Gourley, Larry Gourley, Carrie Gourley, and Sharon Barker.

Ray enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on December 16th, 1968. He continued his education in 1971 getting his G.E.D. in Whidbey Island, Washington. Serving during the Vietnam War, he was a part of the Danang Republiz of Vietnam- Land Mine Warfare, Demolitions and Vietnam Cong Booby Traps in 1970. In 1971, he attended the Marine Corps Institute in Washington, D.C. and the Marine NCO. In 1972, he was with the Marine Corps Institute in Washington, D.C. for the M60 Machine gun. Ray was a M60 Machine Gunner; Proof Director of Small Arms. While serving in Vietnam, he received the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Purple Heart, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal in 1960, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Good Conduct Medal, Republic of Vietnam Mentorius Unit.

Ray retired in 1988, as a Steel Worker for Reynolds Aluminum in Kent, Washington for 10 years. He was a member of the American Legion in Bellingham, Washington Post #7. Ray enjoyed camping, woodworking, anything outdoors (fishing, hiking, etc.), and especially loved spending time with his grandkids, as well as watching football and college basketball. Ray was known by many as a kind, loving, fiercely loyal, considerate man. He lived by his Marine Corps motto "Semper Fi" and was also a mischievous, yet determined man. He was a fighter.

Family and friends may show their love and support as they lay him to rest during a graveside service at 10:30 am on Saturday, May 7th at White Lick Cemetery in Mooresville.
