Obituary for Nova C. Newton

Nova Carrol Newton, 81, of Kansas and formerly of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at the home of his daughter on the evening of February 22, 2020. Nova Carrol was born in Taswell, Indiana on October 8, 1938 to the late Edward and Zelma Claris (Highfill) Newton. Nova married the love of his life, Lillie Mae (Gilliatt) Newton on July 3, 1965.

Nova Carrol grew up and spent 25 years in Orange County, IN before moving to and residing in Indianapolis for most of his life. He graduated from French Lick High School in 1956. While in the Army, Nova served in Germany before being honorably discharged in 1963. Nova was an honorable, hard working man known for his generosity and servant heart as evidenced by sharing the abundance from his garden, volunteering at church, helping his kids, and clearing snow from neighbors' driveways. He spent his career working power plant maintenance for IPALCO for 32 years before retiring in 2001. Following retirement he drove a school bus for Decatur Township Schools for 12 years. Outside of work, Nova enjoyed tending to his yard, gardening, playing with his grandkids, giving thrilling tube rides behind his boat, reading, and daily walks. The final two years of his life, Nova, along with Lillie resided alternately in Kansas and California with their children as his family shared in his care.

Nova Carrol is survived by his wife, Lillie Mae (Gilliatt) Newton of Kansas; daughter, Deborah (Scott) Rask of Kansas; son, Jathan C. (Melissa) Newton of California; 7 grandchildren: Kelvin, Brittany and Michael Rask along with Paige, Clay, Mackenzie and Drew Newton; and brother, Gene Newton of Greenwood, Indiana.

Nova is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Zelma Claris (Highfill) Newton.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 28, at Jones Family Mortuary, 4165 East Allison Road, Mooresville, Indiana. Viewing and visitation will be from 10-11 prior to the service. Graveside service will be held at West Newton Cemetery immediately following the funeral.
