Obituary for Jack L. Shanklin

Jack L. Shanklin, 93, lifetime resident of the Camby / Indianapolis area, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2023. Jack was born in Indianapolis on August 28, 1929 to the late Charles C. and Ethel Mae (Surber) Shanklin. Jack married Rita Maxine (Wallace) Shanklin on January 3, 1976.

Jack was a 1947 graduate of Decatur Central High School where he played both football and basketball. Jack had the distinguished honor of being inducted into the Decatur Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. Jack served in the Indiana National Guard and became a Service Section Manager for 38 years before retiring in 1984 as a Master Sgt. In 1984 he was recognized as a Legion of Hoosier Heroes, an organization designed to accept members of highest qualifications. He not only enjoyed working on and rebuilding race cars but he also raced at NASCAR tracks, ASA, and ARCA for 34 years. Some of his racing accomplishments include winning the Dayton 500 twice and the sportsmanship award at the Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Jack is survived by his wife of 47 years, Rita Maxine (Wallace) Shanklin; four children: Christy Shanklin of Speedway, Jeffrey (Patti) Shanklin of Mooresville, Stacey Haberman of Speedway, and David (Sarah) Shanklin of Austin, TX; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Jack is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Max, Marvin and Charles Shanklin Jr. and sister, Virginia Butler.

Family and friends may show their love and support from 10am - 1pm, Thursday, February 23rd at Jones Family Mortuary, Mooresville. The celebration of life will be held at 1pm following the visitation on Thursday at the Funeral Home. Jack will be laid to rest in West Newton Cemetery.
