Obituary for Charles William Alber

Charles William Alber, 95, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully with family present on January 27, 2020 in his home. Charles was born in Marion, IN on November 7, 1924 to the late Phillip Robert and Dortha Lee (Robbins) Alber. Charles married Ruth Marie (Weisenberger) Alber on June 9, 1946 .

Charles was a 1942 graduate of Marion High School. He continued his education obtaining a Bachelor's Degree from Indiana Wesleyan University in 1946 and his Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling from Ball State University in 1955 of which he used this degree everyday in teaching.

Charles was a Biological Sciences teacher for 40 years, 25 years with Decatur Township Schools, 11 years in Muncie and 4 years teaching in Kenya before retiring in 1986. His classrooms were always very interesting as they were filled with live animals of all species.

Charles was a member of West Newton Friends Meeting (Church); life member of N.E.A. Quaker Men; West Newton Masonic Lodge #707; Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis; Indiana Stamp Club Inc; American Topical Association; International Organization of Wooden Money Collectors; Indiana State Numismatic Association (Coins); National Education Association; American Philatelic Society (Stamps); and he was an Eagle Scout.

Charles and his family served four years as Friends missionaries in Kenya where Charles served as a teacher and a printer. He was an avid stamp and coin collector. He and his wife, Ruth, traveled to 53 countries from Australila to Zanzibar and to six of the seven continents.

Charles is survived by his wife of 73 years; two children: Elizabeth Lee (Loring) Prosser of Indianapolis and David Bruce (Mary) Alber of Indianapolis; adopted son, James Charles Alber of Jeffersonville; five grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren. Charles is preceded in death by his parents.

Family and friends may show their love and support from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2020 in West Newton Friends Meeting (Church), 6800 South Mooresville Rd. Indianapolis, IN 46221. Brent Bill will officiate the celebration of life memorial service immediately following at 2 p.m. Arrangements are entrusted to Jones Family Mortuary, Mooresville.
