Max L. Shanklin, 95, of Mooresville, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2018. He was born to Charles "Dutch" and Ethel (Surber) Shanklin on March 23, 1923 in Indianapolis. He graduated from Decatur Central High School in 1941 and was Captain of their first high school football team and also earned his Bachelor's Degree from Butler University. He served honorably in the US Army during World War II and the Korean War over the course of 17 years, earning multiple distinctions including the Purple Heart.

Max is survived by five loving grandchildren, Julie Archer, Steve Shanklin, Melanie Coleman, John Young and Matt Beals; eight great-grandchildren, Heather Archer, Chelsey and Jackson Shanklin, Chase and Chaney Coleman, Nicholas Young and Ayden and Grayson Beals; two great-great-granddaughters, Kaylie & Mylie; daughter - in - law, Jean Shanklin; and a brother, Jack Shanklin. He is preceded in death by his parents; a son, Max O. Shanklin; a daughter, Karen Shanklin Crouch; and two brothers, Marvin Shanklin and Charles Shanklin Jr.; a sister, Virginia Butler; and a grandson, Michael Shanklin.

Max was a Department Head of Distribution at Eli Lilly for 46 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of West Newton Masonic Lodge #707 and Decatur Central High School Hall of Fame. He was an avid snow mobile rider and pilot and enjoyed building airplanes. He lived in Mooresville for most of his life.

Family and friends may show their love and support from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, August 2nd and 10-11 a.m. on Friday, August 3rd at Jones Family Mortuary in Mooresville. Pastor Charles Paxton will officiate Max's celebration of life service at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 3rd at the funeral home. Max will be laid to rest at West Newton Cemetery.
